THE CITY-INFO OULU DEMO

The Oulu based companies Avi Studio Ltd and Red Innovation Ltd are developing a multichannel presentation of Oulu as a joint pilot project for web-browsers and mobile phones. The demo version of the service presents the tourist attractions in the city of Oulu. The material consists of videos, audio and images, and the service utilises GPS geographic information in distributing the content. The service is tested on multiple terminal devices. The outcome will be a duplicable service and content concept, which will be marketed to various tourist sites in Finland.

E-CONCERTHOUSE

The E-concerthouse portal is designed by Arte Povera from Oulu, which mainly distributes concerts of classical music on the Internet. The Neo Arena pilot produces a service from the Oulunsalo Soi music festival, the commercially funded earning logic is embedded to be a part of the portal by technology which enhances marketing. The advertisers can thus become “virtual concert hosts” and provide thrilling experiences to its clients.

ELISA

Elisa is the leading Finnish communications service company, a forerunner in providing new mobile and content services, and the market leader in providing broadband connections in Finland. Neo Arena has carried out a pilot project in co-operation with Elisa and ElisaLabs in 2008. ElisaLabs strives for open innovations by using various technological platforms in which the joint network of co-operators from a multitude of backgrounds as well as user and design communities constitute active roles. The aim is to produce innovative solutions based on the actual needs of the users.

The objective of the pilot projects is to create new media service concepts and to test these in production environments suitable for multichannel distribution. The pilot phase is divided into four entities, the first being Internet and mobile video content creation and distribution from the ski jumping veterans Finnish and World Championship competitions in Taivalkoski in February and March, 2008. Content creation and Internet as well as mobile streams were produced. Some parts of the material is still available in the Neo Arena video archives.

The remaining pilot phase entities deal with content management and distribution system definition, execution and development in multichannel environments.

FLOOBS

Floobs is a company founded in early 2007 by introducing the open Floobs.com media portal that enables sending live and edited video material. The video streams can also be followed in real-time, ”live”, through floobs.com. The service works on web-browsers.

The Floobs.com-service by Floobs also provides a video content distribution system, which was a partial co-operation project with Neo Arena in 2007. Neo Arena and Floobs are continuing the development of the service as a pilot project with the SCRUM methodology. A separate R&D-unit or a subsidiary will be founded in Oulu in order to enable the R&D. The pilot aims at not only programming new functions but also to make the contents of Neo Arena and Floobs interchangeable as well as establishing a technical solution for administering copyrights.

KINOBIOS

Kinobios is a digital distribution and presentation system for feature films targeted towards smaller cinema theatres, film clubs, film centres, school film centres and municipalities. The objective is to broaden the range of available films, motivating and assisting film clubs for establishing new venues for screening films. Kinobios is based on open source code software and operating systems with affordable hardware. Saga Vera from Oulu develops the pilot production.

MCMG 1 (Multi Channel Memory Games)

Belleviews and Studio Kuolemaa ja kukkasia are producing the first phase of their Neo Arena pilot project - Multi Channel Memory Games, for developing and maintaining one’s memory. The games are designed for mobile phones and prospective digital television applications are investigated. The games are released on the Internet. The pilot consists of four different memory games with accompanying downloading and stastical portals on the Internet.

PAIKALLIS.TV LOCAL-TV

Paikallis.tv is a service designed for providing Internet distribution of current events and news videos by Krunni Tuotanto from Ii. Local newspapers, radio stations and independent production companies produce the content of Paikallis.tv. You can restrict your search for news videos to your own local area or you can access local news from the entire country. The service will be funded by advertising in the future. The pilot phase will establish a properly administered content creation chain, find interesting and duplicable local news item on a domestic level, and to test the possibilities of interactive Flash-streams in e.g. advertising.

RESPA

IT-Salonen and Apertas Solutions are establishing a Neo Arena pilot project which will result in a multichannel, interactive portal for housing properties. The property portal consists of four areas during the commercial stage: the hardware, applicability, content creation and maintenance services. The pilot phase assembles the hardware, produces the necessary software and collects appropriate content for the properties involved.

VIRTUAALIKIRKKO (“Virtual Church”)

Virtuaalikirkko is a service concept developed by Arte Povera Oy. Virtuaalikirkko provides live stream from the events of the Church and congrecations. During the piloting it was possible to watch the advent events in Oulu Doom Church online at www.virtuaalikirkko.fi. A solid one-man-controllable equipment set-up for broadcasting was developed during a pilot. A video chat called Kirkkokahvit (“Church café”), which provided users with opportunity to chat with priest for example, was also launched. Real-time sign language interpretation was also provided in some of the test broadcasts. Future goals in developing the concept are  launching services for confirmation classes and family occasions, which enables for example live streaming from wedding.

KAUPUNKIKOKOUS (“City Conference”)

The first City Conference for children and youth in Oulu is arranged February 17th from 12 to 2 PM at Oulu City Theatre. The youth of Oulu gathers in the conference to make decisions of common issues. Audience at the location consists of 400 children and the young and a bunch of guests. The City Conference is broadcasted live in internet and watched by the pupils at the schools of Oulu. The broadcast can be seen in www.styrkkari.fi

The City Conference broadcast is a pilot project for developing live streaming set-up for JPS Production. JPS Production is a video production company from Oulu, whose clients are i.e. TV channels, internet video services and film production companies. Piloting aims to live internet streaming becoming a new product for the company.

NETTITERVEISET JOULU 2008 (“Online Christmas Greetings 2008”)

Nettiterveiset Joulu 2008 is a pilot with Lapland Memories and HL MediaDesign whose purpose is to provide multichannel service for tourists in Lapland. Main product of Lapland Memories is to make videos for tourists and piloting aims to  develop additional service by providing the clients with an opportunity to send online greetings from their holiday. HL MediaDesing’s expertise is in the technology of websites, online stores etc. 

During the piloting, in December 2008, Lapland Memories filmed tourists in Luosto. Videos were encoded to flash video format and delivered online during the same or  the next day at the latest.  About 800 videos were made during December. The clients can watch videos at Canterbury Travel’s website:   www.santa-holidays.com/laplandgreetings. Password authentication is required for privacy. HL MediaDesign provided the technology for transferring and encoding the videos.

FORMAT: POJAT (“The Boys”)

Pojat is an animation series created by Alpakka Media. Two three-minutes-long pilot episodes are produced with Neo Arena’s support. Pojat is a story of imaginary plays of two boys. Aimed distribution channels for Pojat are TV and internet. Whole production, including sound, is accomplished at Oulu Region.
